- nutraloaf: The lack of living tissue on the trunks of it and those in the background makes me suspect he made them by embedding younger bonsai in pieces of bleached driftwood.
- carre_rouge: i agree that is most likely bleached and its actually a debated technique in bonsai culture, but that doesn’t mean the tree is not 150 years old. personally I never liked much the bleaching but the old wood tends to turn grey and its not appreciated by everyone.
- graycam: It’s a juniper, which naturally has deadwood on it. You apply lime sulfur on it once or twice a yr to bleach (to enhance) and to kill fungi / funk to stop it from rotting. There’s also live veins in the tree - you just can’t see from this angle.
